I am running for reelection for District 1 on the DISD School Board because we are on the threshold of a revolution in urban education. The changes in the 2005-2006 school year are just the beginning.
As an interested parent, a lawyer, and a scientist, I have a vested interest in making sure that DISD students have access to the best possible education. After all, the DISD students of today are the parents, lawyers and scientists of tomorrow. I want your vote and support for this election, May 13th, 2006.
As a Board member I have served the District 1 community with integrity, honor and hard work. I will continue to collaborate with all members of our community and build public understanding, support and participation between teachers, principals, counselors, administrators and other trustees. I have and will continue to listen to all views and will continue to engage in dialog with all sides of the issues. Through careful planning, research and consensus building we will move the DISD toward excellence.
We are a diverse community, but one student is no more important than another. Our schools are here to serve the educational needs of all our children. The quality of education children receive today reflects their opportunities tomorrow. Every child deserves the best education we can give them. Every student has strengths the schools should develop, and weaknesses the schools should overcome. A key issue for the school board trustees is to create a long-term vision, mapping a course that provides the necessary opportunities children need to reach their full potential. The DISD trustees must support this vision, empower staff, and provide leadership.
I want to enable the superintendent in leading our students into our increasingly global and technological world. It’s no longer enough for our students to simply graduate from high school. We must prepare them for an ever more competitive college and professional environment. With this superintendent and the right Board, DISD is up to the challenge.
Other issues that will certainly come before the Board include losing bright teachers to retirement, redistricting, losing students to the private school system and the suburbs, and overcrowding.
My vision for DISD schools includes:
• Challenging course work for all students at all grade levels
• A partnership in education between teachers, administrators, parents and the School Board
• Preparing students for the future by emphasizing science and languages
• Working with the legislature to improve and simplify funding for public schools
• Increasing harmony and improving morale among all district employees
My prime objective is to make the schools in DISD the schools of choice for Dallas parents!
